Tug of War: Balanced and Unbalanced Forces
Two teams pull the same cart in opposite directions. Who wins depends on the total force on each side.
- Blue team pulls
- 100 N
- Red team pulls
- 100 N
- Net force
- 0 N (balanced)
- Acceleration (F ÷ m)
- 0 m/s²
Blue team (1/4)
Red team (1/4)
Try this
- Make both teams pull with the same total force. Does the cart move?
- Can one large puller balance three small ones?
- Make the difference bigger. Does the cart speed up faster?
Key ideas
- Forces in opposite directions are subtracted to find the net (overall) force.
- Balanced forces (net force 0): no change in motion.
- Unbalanced forces make the object accelerate in the direction of the bigger force: a = F ÷ m.
